Homeschooling Series: Preschoolers - Course of Study in Mathematics

The younger the child, the more crucial the teaching-learning process. Preschool years are lay the foundation for a well-rounded and wholistic education. Hence, it is important for homeschooling parents to get a better survey or report of subject matters to tackle in homeschooling their preschoolers in Mathematics, most importantly with Math being a skill subject. The stronger the foundation on the basics of Elementary Mathematics, the higher the chances of your preschooler developing a natural love for math, numbers and the ordered thinking of concepts and ideas.

Simple Counting Teach simple counting from one to five, one to ten, one to fifteen, one to twenty.. For a more relevant learning, use objects which are significant to the child such as toys, fruits, lights, etc.

One-To-One Relationship Teach pairing relationship.

More Than and Less Than Concept Compare sets of objects to teach the concept of more than and less than.

Writing Numbers Teach the proper writing and ordering of numbers.

Addition Teach the basic meaning of addition. For more relevant learning, again, use objects which are familiar or significant to the kid's everyday activity.

Subtraction Subtraction is to be taught after the child has understood addition. The child's understanding or comprehension of the concept of addition may be gauged by the child's addition of simple one-digit number. Consequently, subtraction may be taught using one-digit numbers and using objects familiar and significant to the child's everyday activities.

Basic Shapes Teach basic shapes using everyday objects like plates for circles, windows for rectangles, letter blocks for squares, etc.

For more retention, subject matter reinforcement may be done by integrating math subject matters with other subjects such as art for shapes, science for addition and subtraction, physical education for simple counting.

Homeschooling a preschool may take much patience and creativity for the parent. It is up to the parent's discretion, through observation, on when to go on to the next lesson.
