My Teacher, My Hero

Teaching is a rewarding profession. It may not be a high-paying job, but it can bring you fulfillment far more than your expectations.Standing tall in front the crowd, a little girl beamed as she pronounced. "When I grow up I want to be a teacher."

That dream remained in my heart for some while. Then I changed my mind about teachers. I thought, I'd rather become an accountant because that time I learnt that having money can give material needs. However my Math skills didn't progress for some reasons. In my mind I decided to be a newscaster or journalist as I enjoyed watching Korina Sanchez and wondered how much money she makes.

College came yet I was still undecided. Mom made the decision. I took the entrance exam for Bachelor in Secondary Education. I felt quite triumphant as I snatched the top 2 position in the entrance exam ranking. What's different is I was not really into teaching. I have plans of working abroad for a higher compensation.

I was a scholar of ex-Senator Tessie Aquino-Oreta making me ignore the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) scholarship for Physics majors. DOST actually sponsors a higher amount but opting that other scholarship keeps me from working in the country.

After six years of different jobs, boyfriends in between and freelance writing online, I was finally married to teaching. And it's the beginning of my story.

Looking through the eyes of my eager students, I feel honored and humbled at the same time. I feel their affection not because of the subjects I taught them but because of my relationship with them. Being a teacher simply means you have to deal with different persons with different attitude, IQ and EQ level. This is the hard part.

Making students follow you every time is easy. But making them love and respect you is the challenge. Every time I deal with difficult classroom situations, I often look back and remember how my favorite teachers made things OK. There are students who quarrel for insignificant reasons, students cutting classes, uncommitted projects and problem-students with emotional and family problems. How to deal with these things are never taught in college.

A teacher becomes a hero in the eyes of her students when she extends a part of her which is not asked by her job description. As a hero saves the world, the teacher becomes the mover of the world inside the classroom. Her meaningful smile can ignite uproar, her frown can still the chaos. By her simple presence, students can run the world with organization.

I salute all the teachers who are heroes in every way possible.
